Apples & such
Dr. Fred Puentes
Find out why in October’s post
For the past five years in October, my wife Maylen and I have taken our grandchildren to North Carolina during the apple harvest season to pick apples right-off the trees. It has become a family tradition that we enjoy just as much as the kids do. We don’t let their parents come along, that’s a “no-no”, since we have declared this to be a sacred event of the “grands” (grandparents and grandchildren). Besides that, their parents would never let them climb as high-up on the trees as we do, and they know that all well. Freedom and personally harvested food, nothing could ever taste better to this youthful bunch. Every single individually picked apple, is the best tasting apple on the tree. The secret, according to them, “the higher the fruit on the tree the better it taste.” Hmm…
This year was a little different than years past; we almost didn’t go. After weeks of hyping-up for the trip and taunting anticipation, we were hours away from our journey. Maylen and I had worked a little harder and longer for days to get some-what ahead on our work load. Playing catch-up becomes a way of life after taking a little extra time-off, if we don’t do it this way. So, in order to minimize the stress afterwards we over-due-it before hand.
It was the afternoon of the day before we were due to leave on our trip that things got complicated. Our twelve year old Boxer Scarlet, who has been part of our family, since we rescued her eight years prior, lost complete use of her rear legs and was dragging herself across the kitchen floor. (I was horrified and heart broken at the sight.) The worst part about it was, that at that very moment I was headed out the door to meet-up with my daughter in Daytona Beach, two and a half hours away, to do a scheduled, meet-and-transfer of my granddaughters. She was headed to a ladies retreat for the weekend and was depending on me to be on time at the agreed upon meeting place. However, the look of fear, confusion and pain on Scarlet’s face was crushing me to my core.
